Use the light you've got and don't be afraid of noise at high ISO
There are times when you've simply got nearly no light. Often when I'm photographing performances you've got what the director gives you. What the moment dictates. Accept it. Work with it. Craft it. Find your own angle to get the shot. Light the main subject, don't sweat the small stuff and get the face.
