You can use it up close about level with the camera in this case to highlight detail and add contrast from the strongly back lit leaves or you can hold it further away to be more subtle. The portable sun is always handy in macro and portrait photography. Learning to be subtle with it so you don't blow out your subject is the key. In this case the abundance of light allowed for a decent shutter speed and a decent depth of field.
